- an interesting book.
- I got this book to help my 5th grade class with surfing the Internet two weeks ago, and to help us prepare for our part of the school nature project (our part covered natural disasters). Not only did this book list sites on natural disasters but had sites on emergency preparedness and recovery for towns, as well as links to federal agencies and (of course) the best weather sites. We did the whole project using this book as our guide!
It also showed us how to get news updates for topics that the class is interested in (the my yahoo! pages), which helped get everyone involved in selecting how we would set up the page for the class. I'm already planning on using it for the first day of school next year.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who has to search for lots of research material--or just topics they're interested in. Yahoo! - I'm glad there's finally a book for people that don't have T1 lines or cable modems and can't spend all their time exploring on line. We only just got a 56k modem, which still means it takes a long time to look for sites, even using online searches with Yahoo!
This book helps narrow it down by selecting only the one or two best sites in every category--which even the Yahoo! portal can't do. Whenever I need something quick, I just look it up in this book and go straight to the site. No muss, no fuss.
Plus, the tips on getting better search results with different search engines are the best I've found. Worth every penny (especially here at ). - Not everyone in the world is "completely wired." I don't get to spend too much time on the web--mostly at nights after work--and it seems like I look around forever just for basic information (mostly personal finance and some rugby sites--my favorite sport).
It wasn't until I read this book that I knew you could search using quotation marks, or the words AND OR NOT NEAR. How come the search engines never told us this stuff? Now I leave this book open right next to my computer every time I surf the web. A great reference. - This book is the ultimate reference to Yahoo!. H. P. the III makes you feel like you almost grew up with him. I highly recommend this for any novice to the Internet. Although not as good as his previous publications on the life of guitarists, this almost makes you want to give up life in the clothing business and work in the internet world.
- I didn't know that if you use quotation marks in most search engines that it'll narrow your Internet search. This is just one of the "tips" that this book has along with 1000 very cool web sites that take you just about anywhere you want to go (this is one big book!). It has definitely made my time on the web a lot more productive.
- Like the Yahoo website, this book found me some pretty cool sites that weren't in some of the search engines I tried. There are some truly cool sites The Onion, the All-Music Guide, the Danger Finder, the Cocktail Club, Bartletts, and my favorite, GORP (the Great Outdoor Recreation Page)
- This book has about a thousand websites that it reviews, and it claims that these are the best of the best. It is actually pretty funny, too, for a reference book, and got me to look at sites I never would have thought to go to.
