Ebook What All Good Dogs Should Know The Sensible Way to Train Jack Volhard Melissa Bartlett 9780470146798 Books

The bestselling dog training book is now completely updated, but still refreshingly uncomplicated. A practical guide to positive training techniques for your puppy or older dog, it covers basic commands, includes information about walking on a leash, housetraining, and other “good dog” behaviors, and covers ways to correct objectionable behaviors. It even addresses issues common to rescue and shelter dogs, including shyness and insecurity. A new chapter on the canine personality profile helps you understand your dog better.
"I adopted a 1-1/2 year old Rottie/boxer mix from a shelter. This dog had had no training, so it was like having a 70-lb puppy! My friend, a dog trainer, suggested this book and it is GREAT. Using this book, Buddy has learned: sit, wait, down, "ah-ah!" (when he's in something he shouldn't be), and drop it. And, it's only been 1 month! We work on his training a bit each morning and each evening. Thanks to this book, we are well on our way to having Buddy be a gentleman!
The only thing I wish the book would go into more detail on is how much time to spend on each session. (I pay attention to the dog, so it seems to work out OK.) But, never having trained a dog before, I like guidance.
I also wish the book had more information on Separation Anxiety. Buddy suffers from this and I want him to be comfortable when I'm away. (And to know the house is safe, too!)
Bottom line -- this book really lives up to its title. Every dog owner would benefit from it. (Unless they are already a trainer!)"

What All Good Dogs Should Know The Sensible Way to Train Jack Volhard Melissa Bartlett 9780470146798 Books Reviews
- I have given away copies of this since it came out- it has no more, no less of what every good dog owner should know.
It's funny and short enough to encourage everyone in the family to read it (whether or not they admit it), so everyone is on the same page.
Sometimes, less is more, and this doesn't overwhelm people who just got a new dog or puppy. Has a great trickle-down effect on kids and husbands. - I originally purchased this book years ago as a new dog owner and felt it was really helpful for reinforcing what we were learning in obedience class. It's clear and common sense advice. I lent it out and never got it back, so when recently adopting a younger dog who needed a little work, I purchased this revised edition and again am finding it really useful with reminders of things I may have forgotten as I've gotten used to my more mature dogs.
- Great book for anyone getting a puppy. Easy to read, in terms kids can understand as well. I had a breeder recommend this book when I was getting my first puppy in 1994. And I have recommended it to friends as well. Now my son's family got a new puppy so I bought this book for them. They are so excited with the puppy and glad to have this book.
- This little book, fun in its presentation, gives a wonderful introduction to training dogs along with an assessment tool to determine what motivates an individual dog. It isn't a cookie-cutter approach. The differences between my two dogs and what motivates them were very accurate and affirmed the differences in the way I train and interact with them. With the current fad of clickers, treats and accusations that traditional approaches to training are cruel or outmoded, this book stands out as a common sense way to look at dogs and why they respond the way they do. It makes SO much sense to approach a dog as an individual. I highly recommend any one who is getting ready to take their dog to a training class to read this book first and let it help you choose the kind of training that will work best for your dog.
- Best basic book on how dogs think and how to train them. As a dog breeder of nearly 50 years with over 50 champions produced, this is the book I still use as 'required reading' from anyone who gets one of my pups. I cannot praise it highly enough. It is especially useful for the first time dog owner - whether you get a purebred or a rescue - READ THIS BOOK!

Bottom line -- this book really lives up to its title. Every dog owner would benefit from it. (Unless they are already a trainer!) - I did expect a bit more. It is written at a very simple level and I went through it in less than two hours. There might be revelations in here that one's dog is, in fact, not doing anything to spite one (this being above the cognitive abilities of dogs). Other than that, I think you can find better, more insightful information out there, even just searching youtube. I also found it a bit dated. You can find better supported and more detailed assistance with what will work to communicate effectively with a dog. I'm glad I didn't spend a lot on it.
- I was just rescued by a wonderful Standard Poodle and immediately enrolled him in a training class. The trainer recommended this book to me, and the Volhard method makes sense and is an easy read. "Shane" is responding beautifully to these easy to understand and easy to learn, SENSIBLE training methods for man's and women's bestest friend.
