Debussy Deux Arabesques Claude Debussy 9790006532803 Books Reviews

  • Two beautiful pieces for intermediate level pianists. This is the preferred edition. It deserves a place in the literature collection of any serious student.
  • You can't beat these pieces. They came right back to me after being in my head for many years.
  • as usual, Hanle edition is the best!
  • All of Henle's editions are first rate...
  • Exactly what you would expect
  • These two works were Debussy's earliest for solo piano and have been immensely popular ever since. You can hear them done in any number of arrangements including synthesizers. But they are works for solo piano. I think they are an excellent introduction to Debussy for intermediate piano students wanting to step up to a challenge.

The first Arabesque is challenging in the way it uses three eighth notes against two (triple versus duple) throughout. Students want to try and count the eighth notes and perfectly fit them against each other. But that will not work. One has to hear the beat and simply play the sounds against the beat. Strict fitting is not required or desirable. Just let the music flow and play it. Learning to hear the music in one's mind and trusting that to guide one's playing is a huge step forward for most intermediate students.

The second Arabesque is very quick and sounds much harder than it actually is IF you use the right fingering and technique to play it. Of course, the true trick to learning to play something quickly is to learn it playing slowly and ACCURATELY. One must settle on the right fingering and use it consistently and reliably to get it absolutely clean while practicing slowly. Once one has that, lifting the whole piece to a faster tempo is almost trivial. But if one practices it at an uneven and ragged tempo; here fast - there slow, getting it to an even single fast tempo is nearly impossible. However, getting students to trust in slow practice is almost the dividing line between those who will go on to advanced playing and those who will not. Sad but true.

These are terrific works. And, as always, I trust and love the Henle editions. Easy to read, easy to trust, and they last if cared for.
