• I love this book! I have read it in English and in Spanish. It makes a wonderful gift. It is the story of an unlikely, yet beautiful, friendship while enlightening the reader about the life and art of one of the greatest Spanish artists of all times, Velasquez.

• This book was poorly written, views were Eurocentric and stereotypical views of Africans. Did not discuss what Juan brought to the artist and his own inherent talent.
• I love this book. I read it in my young 20's. I was descriptive and gave me history of how poorly colored were looked at in Spain. At times I can see myself being in the story as a witness to the setting. I was touched by the tremendous love Juan had for his mom. I recommend this book to high school Spanish classes as a must read.
