A complete trilogy which is a candid, true memoir of a gay man's life, telling a story of love and loyalty, betrothal and betrayal, triumph and tragedy; charting one gay man's attempts to rise above the legacy of a traumatic childhood. The first book deals with Simon's childhood friendship and eventually love affair with an older boy and early sexualisation, the second the trauma of his teenage years and early adulthood, the third his struggle to maintain equilibrium and the disastrous consequences of his failure at one point to achieve that and his fight back to self acceptance. Based on the author's own life, it will strike a chord with many who have been through similar things, as well as those with an interest in such matters, such as police and probation officers, those involved with the gay / LGBT community etc. It's a varied, exciting, demanding, sometimes terrifying life story. Of adult nature in places, it contains some explicit sexual narrative, including sexual violence.

"*Spoiler alert*
I love a book that takes me on a journey. The author has sucked me in and I want more. I shed a tear for Simon more than once and wanted to hold him tight. At times I wanted to slap the author for Simons actions and on a few occasions I yelled out NO!!
I think anybody reading this trilogy will want a particular reunion - but my imagination will have to make that happen. Another review mentions a need to remind oneself this is a story, and not to become upset and anxious. I had to remind myself."

- Truly, this was an emotional roller coaster. It was so intense, that I determined I could only read it during the day, and at night, I'd have to switch to Anne of Green Gables. It was heart gripping at almost every single page.
Now I am not gay, and although I have had some brief experiences with other women, I don't think that I can easily understand being anywhere outside a straight woman. Some of the feelings expressed in the book were startling. Some of the feelings were comforting. I hate to see people feel alone and isolated. Patrick Notchtree describes these feelings within the context of Simon's troubles quite poignantly.
A few parts of the book were rather physically disgusting. I felt the recoil as I'm sure Simon's wife must have, at his indiscretions. The moment when he does actually realize his victims feelings was cathartic and I wish more abusers could have a program where they take the time to be honest about what they had done. The natural life long consequences of his being caught up in legal trouble for his actions were blatant.
The description of Simon's whole life, from beginning to end was beautiful. Not just the feelings, but the sights, the sounds, sometimes the taste of foods. Because the whole of Simon's life had to be kept to a reasonable length for a book, many parts did seem perfunctory, but because they all added up to his life experiences, they could not be deleted just for length.
Only one or two parts near the end of the book became rather monotonous. These were very psychologically relevant, but uninteresting, as well as some of the letters written to various people. I did flip through a set of about ten pages without reading them.
Technically, the writing was excellent, grammar, punctuation, it was all fine. I do recommend this author go back and reformat the book so that chapters or sections begin on new pages, rather than just right after the previous one on the same page. This gives the readers a visual "break" and allows us to take a breath. Quite necessary for a story of this emotional magnitude.
I think that I understand a little better now, men who choose to remain married to women, even after coming to the realization that they are gay. Especially if there are dependency issues. It's not always the best plan to just leave the relationship. Until I started reading about Simon, I had always considered anyone who remained in a straight relationship while being gay, rather foolish. One opinion among many that I am glad to have challenged. - After reading the first book "The Secret Catamite 1, Book of Daniel" I felt such anguish at it's ending so I downloaded this trilogy "The Clouds Still Hang" which continues with the two additional books of the story. During the second book my stomach was a wreck, my guts were twisted. This story is tough to read but well worth it. I just wanted to fix all the problems Simon faced throughout the remaining story. So many people with their own agendas causing situations that Simon couldn't control. Even at the end of the book I feel like a good cry.

I think anybody reading this trilogy will want a particular reunion - but my imagination will have to make that happen. Another review mentions a need to remind oneself this is a story, and not to become upset and anxious. I had to remind myself. - A story of perseverance and persistence. I applaud the author for his resilience, compassion for others and ultimately compassion for himself. A journey of self discovery that contains many constructive lessons for others. I have been inspired by this trilogy - thank you!!
- This beautifully written story about the power of love, and the ability to forgive oneself is the most moving book I
have read in a long time. Bravo! - Patrick C. Notchtree tells the unusual story of his life through his alter ego Simon. Simon is an insecure boy who suffers from the unhappy relationship between his parents. At school he is bullied and has learning difficulties.
The book is in three parts and in the first, he is taken under the wings of a neighbourhood boy, two years his senior. This will change his life. In the second part, the contrast between the blissful time of his friendship with Daniel, which is ended by a traumatic event, and what happens after that could not be greater. There is an uphill struggle with failures and successes. With desperate actions that could have caused that this book never to have been written. But it leads, in the start of the third part to another turning point for the better, when he meets his future wife. The struggle is not over, but the book has a happy ending.
Mr. Notchtree is a proficient and at times captivating writer and I was sucked into the book. It conveys a great feeling of veracity and you really get to know to Simon, who is kind, affectionate and helpful but also at times very insecure. The writer's talent is such that you can very much sympathize with him. And the process of him getting insight into himself is very revealing. Especially in part three, where this leads to an unexpected friendship.
What make the book unusual is the very honest description of the relationship between Simon and Daniel. It started in his pre-teens and cannot be described other than as a love affair, in all aspects. This has effects and consequences in later life that are minutely described in the book. Simon talks about some things that happen as "his crimes". But I really think that this is much more because society thinks this way than that they really are crimes. This one of the reasons why you should really read the book.
